North Mantua Street Improvement Project

The City of Kent, Kent City Schools, and Davey Tree are partnering to make improvements to a nearly half-mile section of North Mantua St., from Needham Ave. to just beyond the northern Kent City limits.

This well-traveled stretch of road includes Theodore Roosevelt High School, River Bend residential development and the corporate headquarters for Davey Tree, and also serves as the northern gateway into the city.

This section of North Mantua has a daily volume of 17,000-18,000 vehicles; concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety, speeding, and vehicular ingress/egress have been a concern in this area for more than 20 years.

The project is an opportunity to transform this stretch of North Mantua to improve facilities and better serve the needs of all users (motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians). The goal is to provide an aesthetically pleasing, stress-free street that meets the current demands of the communities living and working in this area.

A Citizens Advisory Committee worked with the planning committee for more than a year to develop a plan. This project will be successful if it achieves the following:

  • Improves safety for all users
  • Balances vehicular needs with improvements to other modes of transportation
  • Improves vehicle ingress and egress to drives and to River Bend Blvd.
  • Improves aesthetics and gateway features.

The planned improvements to North Mantua Street from Needham Ave. to just beyond the northern Kent City limits include:

  • A single lane roundabout at the relocated Davey Tree driveways/N. Mantua intersection
  • Addition of a right turn lane exiting River Bend Blvd.
  • An upgraded traffic signal at the Roosevelt Dr. intersection
  • Installation of a new median boulevard
  • Pavement resurfacing, curbing, driveways, sidewalk, shared use path, drainage, streetscaping, lighting, signing and pavement markings.

The improvements will integrate with the planned extension of the Lake Rockwell Trail on the school district campus and Davey Tree’s SEED campus.

The project cost is estimated at $5 million, with over $2 million secured in federal and state funding.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 and take approximately one year to complete.
